  • Where we are: Founder perspective in the creative industry

There’s a lot happening in our industry right now. Things feel quieter in some ways, more uncertain in others. The pace has shifted. Timelines stretch. Budgets tighten. There’s more uncertainty, and forward motion takes more patience than it used to. I wanted to pause and name that — honestly — because pretending otherwise doesn’t serve anyone. As the founder of The Spin Style Agency, I feel a deep responsibility to our artists and to the clients and production partners who trust us. This reflection comes from a founder perspective in the creative industry — shaped by listening closely, staying present, and navigating change alongside the people we work with. Lately, that responsibility has looked less like big announcements or growth headlines, and more like steady care, clarity, and presence. Photo by Stacy Suvino To our artists — and the creatives we work alongside If you’ve felt discouraged, uncertain, or like you’re putting in the same effort for fewer yeses — you’re not alone. I see it. I feel it too. This moment in the industry is real, and it’s not a reflection of your talent, your professionalism, or the care you bring to your work. What matters most to me right now is how we stay connected through it — how we communicate honestly, support one another, and keep showing up with integrity even when things feel slower or harder than we’d like. We’re continuing to refine how we advocate for you and how we position your work. Some of that happens quietly, behind the scenes, but it’s intentional and ongoing. I believe deeply that community matters most in moments like this — not when everything is easy, but when we’re navigating uncertainty together. Photo by Stacy Suvino To our clients and production partners Thank you for continuing to work with us thoughtfully and collaboratively. We know the pressure many teams are under right now. Production looks different than it did even a year ago, and the path from idea to execution isn’t always straightforward. Our commitment is simple: to be a steady, clear, and respectful partner — one who cares deeply about the work and the people behind it. Trust and mutual respect are what make great work possible, and those values continue to guide how we show up. Photo by Stacy Suvino Looking ahead — a founder perspective in the creative industry As I look ahead, I’m doing so with intention — and with care. We’re not rushing or forcing momentum where it doesn’t naturally exist. Instead, we’re paying close attention to what’s working, what needs refining, and how we can continue to build relationships that feel aligned and sustainable. The future of Spin isn’t about being bigger for the sake of growth. It’s about being more connected, more thoughtful, and more honest — with ourselves and with the people we work alongside. If you’re an artist, client, or collaborator reading this and wanting to connect, ask a question, or simply be in conversation, I’d love that. Sometimes the most meaningful progress happens when we slow down enough to really listen — to each other and to what this moment is asking of us. — Darcie

  • Celebrating Arlene Martin's Artistry for P-Valley: Emmy Nominee for Outstanding Contemporary Hairstyling

Join me as we celebrate the exceptional talent of Arlene Martin , one of the lead Hair and Makeup artists represented by The Spin Style Agency . Arlene's creative brilliance has earned her a nomination for Outstanding Contemporary Hairstyling at the 2023 Emmys. In this interview, Arlene shares insights and experiences as the Department Head Hairstylist on P-Valley , giving us a glimpse into the artistry behind the show's iconic hairstyles. Darcie:  Arlene, let's start by talking about how you approached the unique hairstyles in P-Valley, considering the show's distinct characters and setting. Arlene:  To capture the essence of each character, I immersed myself in the scripts, blending Katori Hall's direction with my creativity. It was a collaborative process, that resulted in a masterpiece every time. Darcie:  Share with us a memorable or challenging moment during the hairstyling process for P-Valley. Arlene:  Yes, there was a particular moment when we were instructed to produce an ice blonde wig for one of the characters. Ice blonde is one of the hardest colors to achieve in a short amount of time. We proceeded to lift the wig through a coloring process to high blonde (almost white) and the hair just melted off of the wig into the sink. Despite three attempts, we had to opt for a synthetic wig, a humbling experience for this perfectionist. Darcie:  I love how obstacles can spark innovative solutions. Facing challenges sparks creativity and resilience, leading us to find unexpected solutions. I love this virtue in you, Arlene! Darcie:  What trends or techniques did you incorporate to capture the characters' essence? Arlene:  Researching 90s-early 2000s hairstyling in New York, Detroit, and Chicago inspired the avant-garde looks, finger waves, and UpDo styles that defined urban cultural hairstyling. These cities were the originators of urban hype cultural hairstyling. Darcie:  Your dedication to historical accuracy and the urban hype genre truly shines through. The hairstyles became a visual storytelling element in themselves. Darcie:  How do you stay inspired and keep up with the ever-evolving world of hairstyling in the entertainment industry? Arlene:  My artistic gift is innate; inspiration stems from any form of art. Whether a unique hat or abstract art, I can transform it into a wig style. Passion, and my intrinsic gift to create, fuels my continuous growth. Darcie:  Your passion shines through in the artistry you bring to each hairstyle. It's evident that your innate creativity and dedication are key to your success in the ever-evolving world of hairstyling. Darcie:  In the fast-paced world of television production, how do you ensure the continuity of hairstyles across different scenes and episodes? Arlene:  Continuity is very important to every production and it is imperative to have the right key hairstylist on your team. Your key hairstylist is like your second brain. The Key is also in charge of continuity, making sure each actor has the proper hair style for each scene. I am very strategic in choosing the right people on my team. Darcie:  P-Valley has received acclaim for its authentic representation. How did you collaborate with the creative team to ensure the hairstyles reflected the cultural and narrative nuances of the show? Arlene:   I collaborated closely with the production team, receiving directives on wig designs and colors. Subsequently, I engaged with my team daily, providing clear instructions on styling, coloring, and construction. Rigorous research, script references, and open communication were vital elements ensuring the success of our hair department. The seamless coordination within the team, driven by comprehensive information sharing, played a pivotal role in achieving success across all aspects of our work. Darcie:  Any advice for aspiring hairstylists in TV and film? Arlene:  Keep chasing your dreams – they're like flames inside you. Some will fan your passion, making it a blazing fire. Others might try to extinguish that flame. Surround yourself with those who fuel your passion. Your passion for what you do will be your guiding force that will push you. Let your strong drive guide you, even when you're tired or feel like giving up. Your destiny in undeniable so I say run into your destiny. As we applaud Arlene's exceptional contribution to P-Valley, we eagerly anticipate the outcome of the 2023 Emmys where she is nominated for Outstanding Contemporary Hairstyling. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will take place at the Peacock Theater in LA live on January 6th, and the ceremony will air on Fox on January 13th, 2024. Tune in to witness the potential victory of Arlene Martin and the entire P-Valley hair team. Don't miss the chance to be part of this exciting moment in hairstyling history! • Breaking Barriers: Set Designer Sinclaire Reddings Shares Her Inspirational Journey of Faith, Career, and the Fight for Diversity.

Chloe X Halle for Essence Magazine- Set design by Sinclaire Reddings From a young age, Sinclaire Reddings knew she was destined for a creative path. Inspired by her grandmother's stories, whom she affectionately calls "The Original Creative," she grew up hearing about her grandmother's sacrifices. Despite being a talented painter and seamstress, her grandmother had to leave school and work on a farm to support her family. This legacy of resilience and creativity, alongside her mother's influence, motivated Sinclaire to pursue a career as a set designer. Sinclaire was born and raised in Thomasville, Georgia. She dealt with racism and the lack of resources for creative children in her hometown. So, after attending college and earning a degree in Business Administration, she aspired to move to a more inclusive and diverse place i n 2019, she decided that place was Atlanta. She got her big break in 2022 when she was hired as the Production Designer and Art Director for Bounce TV. This was followed by projects with rappers Lil' Baby and Lil' Durk gaining notoriety for her set designing skills.   Sinclaire has continued to excel in her career after signing with The Spin Style Agency in 2023 on a referral from a resident set designer, Risha Carnes. Her portfolio is a visual work of art with familiar faces like Kevin Bacon, Stacey Abrams, and the sister singing duo Chloe and Halle, to name a few. When asked for a standout moment in her career thus far, she says working with renowned fashion designer Law Roach would come in pretty high, followed closely by her work with Essence magazine. Working with icons like Rihanna and Beyoncé and building a set for the Super Bowl are just a few items on her ever-growing vision board. She recently got the opportunity to build a set from scratch for an upcoming Netflix special, and she loved being given creative latitude to execute a vision of that magnitude.   Having faced challenges as a Black woman growing up in a small town, Sinclaire is deeply passionate about diversity and inclusion. This shared commitment made The Spin Style Agency the perfect home for her. She wants to be a trailblazer for other Black people in the creative arena by executing creative direction with excellence and showing the industry that this is the rule and no longer the exception. She emphasizes, "There is simply not enough representation in the creative process and the positions where the decisions are made. I want to change that.” Law Roach- Set design by Sinclaire Reddings Sinclaire credits her love for what she does and her success to her unwavering faith, which has been her driving force. “The most powerful thing you can do on earth is create, and I am grateful that this is what God has called me to do,” she says. She smiled as she recalled the stories she heard as a little girl from her mother, a singer who dreamed of Broadway, and her grandmother’s beautiful paintings that had to be put on hold. With an unshakeable feeling that she is supposed to carry something from their legacy, she promises not to let their stories, sacrifices, or prayers go to waste. When asked where she saw herself in five years, she quickly responded that she was in love with where she was, but “I will go wherever God and opportunity take me.” No doubt, Sinclaire Redding is a name we will be hearing for a long time. For more of Sinclaire's work , check out her phenomenal portfolio on our website, The Spin Style Agency ! ERIKKA HART Erikka built a career as a trusted makeup artist for two decades, collaborating with brands like Nike, Adidas, Netflix, and Hulu and working with huge icons like Shaq (pun intended). But storytelling has always been her passion, expressed through poetry, blogs, short stories, and journals.   In 2020, a pivotal pause inspired her to return to school and finally pursue writing as a career.   Today, we're proud to have Erikka as our lead writer. She channels her storytelling skills and detail-oriented mindset into every piece she creates. Her years as a makeup artist gave her an unmatched eye for nuance, which now elevates her copy. With us, she’s crafting content that tells a story and leaves a lasting impression.

  • Building Momentum as a Freelancer with the Flywheel Effect

The Challenge Freelancing comes with seasons. Some months you’re racing from project to project; other times, your inbox is quiet. Those slow periods can feel uncomfortable — like momentum has slipped away. The Mental Model: The Flywheel Effect Jim Collins described the flywheel as a giant, heavy wheel that takes enormous effort to push at first. But with consistent small pushes, it begins to move faster, building unstoppable momentum. Portfolio work styled by Morgan Locke, Photographed by Iain Bagwell Freelance careers work the same way. Each “push” you make in slow periods compounds over time: Reaching out to an old client. Concept, produce, and shoot dream projects (before a client asks for them) Experimenting with new tools Sharing your work online, even if just a small project. These actions rarely bring instant results. But just like turning a heavy wheel, they build energy. And when the next opportunity comes, you’re already in motion — ready to catch it. Portfolio work styled by Morgan Locke, Photographed by Iain Bagwell The Takeaway Don’t see downtime as wasted time. See it as a chance to push your flywheel. Over time, those small, steady efforts create the momentum that carries you through feast and famine cycles. The Practice These visuals were born from a collaboration between a stylist and photographer who used their downtime to experiment, create, and keep the flywheel turning. Portfolio work styled by Morgan Locke, Photographed by Iain Bagwell The Lesson Downtime doesn’t mean standing still — it means choosing how to move. With every small action, you’re building a wheel of momentum that will be there when the next opportunity arrives.

  • Reigniting Your Inspiration: 6 Strategies for Creative Entrepreneurs in Commercial Photography

As a creative entrepreneur in the competitive world of commercial photography, staying inspired can be challenging. However, staying inspired is crucial for maintaining the passion and drive necessary to succeed in this competitive field. Here are 6 strategies for staying inspired: Networking with fellow creatives: Surrounding yourself with people who share your passion for photography can be a great way to reignite your creativity. Attend industry events, participate in photography groups, or collaborate with other photographers to get the creative spark you need. Networking can also lead to new opportunities and perspectives that can have a significant impact on your own inspiration and motivation. As James Clear notes, "Your network is your net worth." Building relationships and surrounding yourself with people who can help you grow and succeed in your career is essential for your continued success. Collaborate on test shoots: Collaborating on projects allows you to learn from others and contribute your unique vision and style. This can result in fresh, inspired work that showcases the best of everyone involved. Surrounding yourself with other creatives can not only lead to new opportunities and perspectives but can also have a significant impact on your own inspiration and motivation. As the quote often attributed to Jim Rohn goes, "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with." Spending time with other photographers, wardrobe stylists, and prop stylists can help raise your creative standards and push you to reach new heights. Invest in education: The commercial photography industry is constantly evolving, so staying current with new techniques and trends is essential. Read industry blogs, attend workshops and training sessions, and engage in online courses to continue learning and growing as a photographer. Take on new challenges: Experimenting with new styles, techniques, or subjects can help keep you inspired. Embrace projects that push you out of your comfort zone to keep your creativity flowing. Prioritize self-care: Running a business can be stressful, so taking care of yourself is essential. Take breaks, engage in activities you enjoy, and prioritize your mental and physical health to avoid burnout and stay inspired. Embrace failure: Failure is a natural part of the creative process, so don't be afraid to take risks and make mistakes. Embrace failure as a learning opportunity, and use it to grow and stay inspired as a photographer. Fueling your inspiration as a creative entrepreneur in commercial photography requires a well-rounded approach. It’s about building connections, embracing continuous learning, stepping into new challenges, prioritizing self-care, and viewing setbacks as opportunities for growth. By integrating these strategies, you can stay inspired, push creative boundaries, and build a career that evolves with you. • A Strategic Plan for Life

We plan for businesses, projects, and careers—why not for life itself? Photographer - Liz Vone Hoene Lately, I’ve felt a little uncertain—like I’ve been moving forward but not always sure if I’m on the right path. So I did something I often do in business but rarely take the time to do for myself—I sat down and mapped out a SWOC analysis. It was uncomfortable at first. Looking at my strengths made me realize that I don’t always put them to work in the ways that could serve me best. Acknowledging my weaknesses forced me to ask whether I actually need to fix them or if I just need to stop fighting them. And the hardest part? Seeing opportunities I’ve been too hesitant to take. But through this process, I’m gaining clarity—on where I am, what I have, and what’s possible. And I wanted to share it with you. The SWOC analysis  (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Challenges) is a tool often used in business strategy, but it can also be a powerful framework for personal growth. You may have heard of SWOT analysis , which looks at Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. SWOC is a slight shift—replacing 'threats' with 'challenges' to focus on constructive problem-solving rather than external risks. I’ve found this version more useful for personal reflection. To try it for yourself, start by making a simple list of: Your Strengths Your Weaknesses Your Opportunities Your Challenges Once you’ve identified these, ask yourself: How can I use my strengths to help myself, serve others, and live a better life? Which of my weaknesses do I need to improve, and which ones do I need to accept as they are? What opportunities can I explore to improve myself and my life? What can I do about the challenges I face today? How a Strategic Plan for Life Brings Clarity and Growth I’ve always been someone who loves strategy—solving problems, seeing connections, thinking ahead. But when it comes to life itself, it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and forget to zoom out. Every time I take a step back and reassess—whether it’s through SWOC or just asking myself the right questions—I’m reminded that clarity isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about seeing what’s in front of you and deciding what to do with it. A strategic plan for life provides a roadmap to help navigate challenges and seize opportunities with confidence. It helps set the tone for how you want to show up in life, work, and relationships. So, if life were a strategy, what would your plan be?

  • The Cold, Hard Facts on Winter Skincare: How to Help Your Skin Survive the Cold, Dry Air with Tips from Skincare Guru, Corianne Cowan

I spoke with hair and makeup artist Corianne Cowan from The Spin Style Agency in Atlanta about protecting your skin from the cold outdoor air and indoor heat during winter. Erikka: Hey Corianne! First of all, your skin is always amazing! What is your daily skin routine? Corianne: Thanks! In the morning, I usually wash my face, apply an eye cream, use an antioxidant serum, put on sunscreen, and finish with lip gloss before heading out. At night, I prefer a double cleanse and prep my skin before applying Tretinoin, a prescription medicated acne cream that works to keep pores clear. Erikka: What do you change about your routine to adapt to the colder temperatures? Corianne: During the winter months, instead of washing my face in the morning, I opt for atoner. I use Mediheal’s toner pads which is a K Beauty brand (an overall term for skincare products from South Korea), and then continue with my regular daily skincare routine, always finishing with sunscreen. In the evenings during the winter, my skin is often more inflamed, and I can’t use Tretinoin as frequently. On those nights, I focus on moisturizing my skin and use calming sprays to soothe my skin. One of my favorite calming sprays is Dermalogica , which contains oatmeal extracts and does an excellent job of soothing my skin instantly. Erikka: What product(s) can’t you live without when the temperature drops? Corianne: During cold weather, I always use a hydrating mask to keep my skin moisturized and plump. My go-to product is the Caudalie Vinosource-Hydra Moisturizing Mask , which I also use on brides or for press-related events. Even though I have oily skin, I still need to use a hydrating mask because heaters can dehydrate my skin. Therefore, it's important to keep your skin moisturized even if you have oily skin. Apart from the hydrating mask, I also use a simple, rich, and thick moisturizer. One of my favorites is made by LaRoche Posay and is approved by the National Eczema Association . It's suitable for both face and body use, and since I have eczema, it's a great product for me. The moisturizer has simple ingredients and is very hydrating. Erikka: Any advice on relieving redness in the winter? Corianne: When it comes to redness, it's important to identify the root cause. Sometimes, it can be due to temporary irritation caused by environmental factors or situational triggers like exposure to cold weather. However, with the abundance of skincare products available on the market, the problem may be due to overuse of different products. So, my first advice is to simplify your skincare routine. Another problem that I often come across is over-exfoliation, which can damage your skin's barrier. It's best to exfoliate a maximum of two times a week to allow your skin to heal and calm down. If you're looking for ways to reduce the appearance of redness during the colder months, using concealer or a tinted moisturizer can be a great option. I love Hourglass Vanish Airbrush or for lighter coverage , and Kosas Revealer Concealer . My favorite tinted moisture is Danessa Myricks’ Yummy Skin Tint . Erikka: My biggest pet peeve is dry lips. What products do you recommend to keep lips moisturized in the winter? Corianne: You know, I feel like this is so common. I work with models and talent doing commercial photography and you are working with everyday people providing natural beauty makeup. Dry lips are prominent, and not just in the winter. Lips are the first thing I look at when someone sits in my makeup chair so I can get an idea of what I need to do to make sure they look great for commercial and editorial photography. If I’m going to put on lipstick or even lip gloss, I don’t want to put that on top of really dry skin that is peeling because that’s not going to look good. So, the first thing is to stay hydrated, which is not a topical thing but it does make a difference. Drink water. If you struggle with drinking water, add some fruit like berries, watermelon with mint (my summer favorite), cucumber, or a water enhancer. Secondly, I know there are a lot of lip balms to choose from and I even posted recently on social media about the struggle of finding a good one. I feel like most products don’t actually moisturize your lips. For a simple lip balm that never fails, I highly recommend Aquaphor because it keeps your lips moisturized beTer than the lip oils that are popular nowadays. Lip oils can't penetrate your lips and protect them the way that Aquaphor can, which is essen;al to keep your lips supple. I personally have a large tub of Aquaphor at home and always carry a tube in my work bag, backpack, and everywhere I go. I have tried many of the fancy brands, but Aquaphor is hands down the best. CORIANNE’S PRO TIP: Use a baby toothbrush to gently exfoliate your lips with a DIY sugar and honey mixture (about 1/4 tsp each), then apply Aquaphor , it works perfectly! Erikka: I appreciate you taking the ;me to share your expertise with me and The Spin Style Audience, I know I’ll personally be using some of these ;ps myself. • Radiant Holidays: Corianne Cowan's 4 Essential Makeup Tricks

I sat down with makeup artist Corianne Cowan from The Spin Style to talk all things holiday and to see if she would give me a peek into her makeup bag! Corianne relocated to Atlanta from Texas to continue her career as a hair and makeup stylist and joined the Spin team 6 years ago. I was also signed to the agency then, and that's when our paths crossed. I still remember our first encounter on set when she came up to me with her signature gentle voice and introduced herself. I quickly realized that she was soft-spoken, and she was clear I was not. But that didn't matter; we instantly hit it off, and our quiet laughter throughout the day while we worked became something we both cherished for years. Corianne is a powerhouse in the Atlanta creative industry and specializes in commercial beauty and creative hairstyling, which she utilizes in fashion photoshoots and editorials. When I asked Corianne about her favorite Christmas tradition, she replied with a huge smile, "Hot chocolate and watching The Polar Express with my son Darion!" This has been their tradition since he was a baby, and she said she has no plans of changing that one; it’s the most special to her. With the holiday season fast approaching, it's time to start thinking about creating the perfect makeup look for all the festive parties and events coming up. There are so many beauty industry trends to choose from, from bold lips to shimmering metallics— I asked Corianne to weigh in and share her top picks for this season's stunning, classic looks and the products she can't live without. Powder Foundation Powder foundation is a must-have in her makeup bag, and she says it is essential for normal to oily skin. It's perfect for creating holiday makeup looks that require additional coverage for a more glamorous look and is ideal for touch-ups throughout the evening. However, if you have dry skin, it would be best to use it only for touch-ups. Her favorites are Make Up For Ever HD Skin Matte Velvet Undetectable Longwear Blurring Powder Foundation (for oily skin) and Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Powder Foundation (for dry skin). For darker skin tones, she goes for Fenty Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Powder Foundation due to the wide variety of colors that are not too red and provide buildable coverage. Bold Lip When it comes to holiday parties, a bold lip can really make a statement. Even if you usually opt for a more natural look, spicing things up with a brighter shade can add some fun to your makeup routine. If you typically wear a nude lip, try a classic red to add some pop. On the other hand, if you're already a fan of red lipstick, experiment with a deep berry shade for a change. While I know professional makeup looks are her thing, I asked Corianne the secret to making a bold lip stand out. “Lip liner. Just be sure to choose a shade slightly different from your lipstick to create more depth.” Start by lining your lips with the pencil, then smudge the line inward slightly before applying your lipstick. Here are a couple of bold reds she loves! Hourglass Confession Ultra Slim High-Intensity Refillable Lipstick and Tom Ford Liquid Lip Luxe Matte . Metallic Liner If you want to add a little sparkle to your look, metallic eyeliner gives holiday vibes every time. This option can be added to full glam but also works for those who wear minimal to no makeup. Ensure you give yourself time to perfect the liner—Corianne recommends you allow 10 minutes for liner and false lashes to avoid frustration. She added, “Metallic eyeliner is a beautiful and festive way to enhance your look, whether you prefer a winged liner, kitten liner, or a simple line along your upper lid.” Try Urban Decay Moondust Liquid Glitter Eyeliner or Danessa Myricks Beauty Colorfix Foils for a look that sparkles all night. Micellar Water Corianne, a self-proclaimed skincare junky, shared one of her absolute favorite tips to keep your skin merry and bright all season (and all year round). “ It's common to feel exhausted after a long day and just want to go to bed without bothering to remove your makeup, sunscreen, dirt, and other impurities from your face. However, taking care of your skin is essential, especially during this busy time of year. So, no excuses!” For those late-night makeup removals, keep micellar water and cotton pads beside your bed. She recommends Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water Makeup Remover Cleanser , which is gentle and effective. The Christmas season is the most wonderful time of the year, and it's the perfect time to try out new beauty trends or some of the timeless classics that we all know and love. You can wear a bold red lip and sparkling eyes or rock a radiant glow. Whatever you decide to do this holiday season, Corianne says to make sure not to miss the opportunity to watch The Polar Express! • A Culinary Conversation: Insights from Food Styling Experts Laura Cole and Naomi Smith

Hey styling enthusiasts! Today, we're diving into the world of food styling with two incredible artists from The Spin Style Agency – Laura Cole and Naomi Smith. Welcome, ladies! Spin Style Agency: Laura, in your extensive experience, what would you say is an essential rule in professional food styling? Laura Cole: In food styling, professionalism is key. It's about being reliable, showing up on time, and having a good attitude. Remembering who hired you, whether it's a client, agency, or art director, is crucial. While expressing your opinion is fine, ultimately, it's about respecting the process and meeting the client's vision. Spin Style Agency: Naomi, your thoughts? Naomi Smith: I'd echo what Laura said. Delegating to your team, clear communication, collaboration, and understanding the brand are fundamental. It's not just about making food look appetizing; it's doing so efficiently to stay on schedule for demanding shoots. Spin Style Agency: Naomi, can you share a memorable experience related to food styling? Naomi Smith: Yes! During one of my shoots for Carnival Cruise featuring Shaquille O'Neal, I collaborated with my team to create three fake cakes for background aesthetics. Simultaneously, we baked identical edible cakes for consumption. What caught me by surprise was when the talent indulged in the delicious creations they couldn't get enough. Shaquille not only enjoyed my marble cake but was so impressed that he requested his own personal slice not once, but twice, off-camera. Additional Tip: Make sure to ask about talent allergies, or dietary restrictions. Always ask if talent will consume on camera, even if they say no sometimes that might change. So be flexible. Spin Style Agency: Laura, what are some common mistakes in the industry that you think should be highlighted? Laura Cole: The most common mistake I've encountered is when there are too many voices on set. It's best to have one person to go to for approvals. Getting mixed messages can lead to confusion and wasted time. Spin Style Agency: Naomi, any industry mistakes you've observed? Naomi Smith: A lead stylist not communicating or delegating properly can result in an inefficient workflow. Also, not asking enough questions in preproduction can leave you unprepared on set. Spin Style Agency: Laura, tell us about your favorite tools or techniques that make your food styling work easier or more effective. Laura Cole: There are a few tools I can’t do without. Tweezers are at the top of the list, spray bottles for spritzing, Q-tips, paper towels, paintbrushes, and scissors plus a few more. One thing that has made my job easier when needed, is learning how to make fake ice cubes that float, unlike the glass or plastic kind that sink and are a dead giveaway that they aren’t real. Spin Style Agency: Naomi, what about your go-to tools or techniques? Naomi Smith: Precision tools like tweezers, syringes, and piping kits are essential. I often use MASA or instant potatoes as a filler to prop up food items. It's all about the details! Spin Style Agency: Wrapping up our culinary conversation, let's delve into the impact of your expertise on your food styling projects. Laura Cole: When it comes to success, it's all about embracing a strong work ethic, practicing patience, and maintaining nerves of steel. Additionally, the streamlined process with one designated person for approvals minimizes confusion and ensures a smoother workflow. Naomi Smith: Understanding how the food will look before it hits the camera is a game-changer. Preparation is the cornerstone, especially for shoots involving talent consuming the food. Through dedicated practice and meticulous preparation on prep days, we guarantee a sustained visual allure on camera. Spin Style Agency: Thank you both for sharing your expertise and these valuable food styling insights. We love to peer into the art and science of food styling.
